Joshua J. Kassner, professor and director of the philosophy program at The University of Baltimore and the author of several works covering ethics, social justice, international human rights and more, has written a new book that is being called an important step forward in understanding what human rights are, how that knowledge can be practically applied in a variety of settings and cultures, and what it takes to overcome presumptions about this crucial part of human existence. A New Philosophy of Human Rights: The Deliberative Account offers a strong argument for a reassessment of the study of human rights, from a number of different vantage points.
The Bus Stops Here: StartUp Maryland Day Returns to UBalt

Since 2012, Startup Maryland's "Pitch Across Maryland" bus tour has given aspiring entrepreneurs from The University of Baltimore the opportunity to present their ideas and concepts for new businesses with a select group of successful business leaders. On Nov. 19, the organization's "STRT1UP Road Show" bus tour included a stop at UBalt's Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Throughout the afternoon, participants engaged in workshops, opportunities to practice their elevator pitch, and networking with like-minded people.

Dr. Denise Turley, vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and an influential voice in artificial intelligence (AI) and leadership, will lead a discussion for the final 2024 edition of The University of Baltimore's AI in Practice webinar series on Dec. 11. Dr. Turley's session, "The Future with AI: Balancing Opportunity and Inequity," will explore the ways that AI is transforming business and education, with an emphasis on personalized learning, improved accessibility, and expanded opportunities for underserved communities. At the same time that these positive developments are happening, AI can also introduce biases, widen the digital divide, and pose privacy concerns.
Schaefer Center for Public Policy Sees 23 Graduate from the Maryland Certified Public Manager Program's Latest Cohort

The Schaefer Center for Public Policy at The University of Baltimore will graduate the members of its Maryland Certified Public Manager Program 16th cohort on Nov. 15. The graduation ceremony's guests will include county and city government officials, while the ceremony will feature capstone project presentations from five of the candidates. These presentations will address a significant issue in their organization and solutions to the issue. One presenter will be receiving the Askew Award in recognition of their exemplary capstone project.
Interdisciplinary Studies Major Rebekah Opher Receives 2024 Baltimore Weaver Award

Denit Honors scholar at the University, has received a 2024 Baltimore Weaver Award for her work in addressing food insecurity for unhoused people in the city.
